Guru Shihsya Parampara: Pt Chetan Joshi
Pt. Chetan Joshi, is a well-known name in the music world. He is a noted flautist in the Hindustani Classical Music tradition. He was born in Jharia and brought up at Noamundi and Bokaro Steel City. He was trained under Late Acharya Jagadish (Bokaro), Late Pandit Bholanath Prasanna (Allahabad), Late Pandit Raghunath Seth (Mumbai) and Pandit Ajoy Chakravorty (Kolkata). He has been awarded with Rajakiya Sanskritik Samman (State honor) by the Government of Jharkhand. He has also been awarded Sur Mani, Bismillah Samman, Sangeet Kala Gaurav Award, Kala Ratna Sammaan, Sangam Sammaan and many other awards and accolades. Shri Santosh Kumar, his disciple, along with Jayita Sengupta from Caesurae Collective, had the privilege of talking to him about his ideas on music and the Guru-Shishya relationship, in Gangtok recently. Pt. Joshi spoke about the shortcomings of Music as a discipline taught within the university system. He spoke strongly for the age-old Gurukul system, just as he cited the example of the education system in many of the universities outside India, where Music as a discipline is combined with Human Sciences as part of the curriculum. There was an exchange of experiences in the university teaching-learning system between the Guru and the disciple, Shri Kumar Santosh, while Jayita Sengupta compeered the discussion. Pt Joshi in conclusion to the discussion, played Saraswati Bandana, as a homage to the Indian goddess of learning and Fine Arts.
